Basterd Scouting – Season 27 Mock Draft v1.0 (Lotto edition)

And its that time of year again, time to look forward to the draft for the non-playoff teams. Unlike in past years, this time around Basterd Scouting has decided to do a simulated lottery as well. So lets take a look at who got lucky and who didn’t (for those wondering, I used the following site to generate the results: http://www.draftpicklottery.com)

5. Calgary (-2)

4. Boston (-2)

3. Anaheim (-2)

2. Dallas (+3)

1. LA (+3)

The Kings are the lucky winners of the lotto, appropriate since they have lost out on the lottery in multiple years.

The Kings have been trying to get that top pick for the last 3-4 seasons now that they finally luck into that pick. Dallas also gets lucky and moves up 3 spots as well to the also coveted #2 spot. Anaheim, Boston and Calgary all stay in the same order as where they finished but all dropping 2 spots.

So now to the pick predictions:

  1. LA – RW Andrei Svechnikov (Earlier in the season I had Tkachuk as the top pick but I’ve since seen the value in keeping Svech at this spot. And he’ll look great alongside Barkov in the near future)
  2. Dallas – C/LW Brady Tkachuk (I’m actually thinking this pick gets traded but its still Tkachuk who goes here. He’s done everything to prove he deserved to be drafted this high)
  3. Anaheim – C/RW Filip Zadina (Having already started his pro career in the AHL, I think he just fits well for the Ducks in the not-too-distant future and helps turn that team around)
  4. Boston – C Rasmus Kupari (Another pick that I think could get traded, possibly involving the #2 pick, but I think Kupari has done quite a lot this season and why I had him jump up this high)
  5. Calgary – D Adam Boqvist (Even though Smallz’s pick dropped, he likely gets a guy that makes him better than the ones picked ahead of him. He’s played pretty well in his D+1 season so far and I think he’s got a bright future ahead)
  6. Tampa Bay – RW Martin Kaut (Bolts may just go BPA here which I think is still Kaut but one of the d-men could be a fit. Having also started his pro career could be good for Blake too who doesn’t seem long for the rebuild process)
  7. Carolina – D Evan Bouchard (A wildcard pick to be sure, I had Andrew taking Bouchard more out of need than anything but a great pick that has shown he’s nearly NHL ready)
  8. Columbus – LW Joel Farabee (Another pick that I can see getting traded but if not, Farabee would be a good choice for Kris’ depth chart)
  9. Buffalo – C Joe Veleno (With Adam being so deep on defense already, it’s easy to go with taking the flyer on Veleno. He’s been better in his D+1 season and I think the Sabres can be patient on waiting for him to develop)
  10. Philly – D Noah Dobson (A tough spot to pick here so I’m thinking Nick goes with the BPA at this point, even if his D+1 season hasn’t been that great)
  11. Winnipeg – D K’Andre Miller (Jets get a guy who makes a ton of sense for them with their depth chart. Miller has proven he should’ve been drafted higher than in the NHL draft but this pick could also get moved)
  12. New Jersey – RW Serron Noel (Saif’s prospect pool is pretty bare so anyone would be a good pick at this point. But I went with the big kid who started out pretty hot in his D+1 season and should be a sim favorite)
  13. Philly (via Detroit) – C Liam Foudy (After picking a d-man earlier, I figure Nick is going to want a forward and he can be patient with Foudy’s development)
  14. Edmonton – D Nils Lundkvist (Rod just missed the playoffs but his consolation prize is a good prospect in Lundkvist. With the forward-heavy roster the Oilers have, Lundkvist is a great fit)

Basterd Scouting hopes you enjoyed the list and expects to publish a final mock once the playoffs are over and all of the draft positions are decided.
