New Boss in Buffalo

The Buffalo Sabres have hired a new general manager following the resignation of Greg Nolastname. Stefan Aldrich, the former Anaheim Ducks GM, took over the Sabres last Tuesday following a two season sabbatical from the league. Buffalo have struggled with continuity since long term manager Francis Cormier stepped down two seasons ago and are now on their 4th GM within three seasons. The appointment of Aldrich will hopefully add some stability to a team that is in desperate need of some care and attention.

Greeted by a very sorry state of affairs with a team barely capable of icing a full roster, the new GM kicked things off by adding veterans Dave Bolland, Clarke MacArthur and Anton Khudobin. These three moves bring the team within salary cap compliance for the upcoming season allowing efforts to be focused on rebuilding.

The Sabres haven’t made the playoffs since season 16 where they won the Eastern Conference title finishing with a 46-21-11-2 record. They fell well short of a championship that season however, with a second round exit courtesy of the Winnipeg Jets. The return of Aldrich does show a positive move by the organisation to embrace the rebuild though, with the new GM citing his experience to preach patience as the key to the teams future success.

“I think the best case scenario is that we could be competing for a playoff spot in three to four seasons time. If we try and rush the rebuild we could end up in a similar situation as before where any competitiveness is short lived and the team regresses.”

Although it all seems like doom and gloom for the foreseeable future, there is reason for Buffalo fans to be hopeful. Several key prospects that the team will look to build around are currently on the cusp of making the jump to the big league. This includes forwards William Nylander (20), Mikko Rantanen (19) and Artturi Lehkonen (21), as well as highly touted defenseman Ivan Provorov (19). Further off the team also has season 22 draftees Pierre-Luc Dubious and Samuel Girard, along with season 20’s Jakub Zboril, Gabriel Carlsson and Conor Garland to watch develop.

It’s a long road ahead for the Buffalo Sabres and their new General Manager, but with a lot of patience and a bit of luck the team could find itself back in the hunt sooner rather than later.

“We just need to take our time, build through the draft, and make intelligent informed moves that help this team reach the level that the fans deserve.”
