Season 21 Draft Review

Ben has written a fantastic Season 21 Draft Review on the boards:

The Eichel and McDavid drafts are over and both found the same home, Toronto, obviously a team with a bright future but who else was able to use their picks wisely in year 21. I will assess all 28 teams drafted players, provide a grade for the team based on players selected and where they were selected, I’ll also give my two cents on players feel free to ask for more info, I’ll have it on some won’t on others.

Anaheim – 1 selection, highest pick 16 – Denis Guryanov.
Grade B+: Have not seen Guryanov live but getting a player selected 12th OV in NHL at 16 in a split draft is not something to complain about. Guryanov has had a bit of a rough season suffering through a few injuries playing as an 18 year old in a mens league however he has a good shot and as he fills out his lanky frame his durability and strength should increase. Anaheim may have found themselves a top 6 winger with this pick.

Boston – 0 selections
Grade N/A

Buffalo – 3 selections, highest pick 3 – Mikko Raantanen
Grade C+: Have not seen any players live but have caught TV games. Raantanen was a good start to the draft for Buffalo, the big powerforward is spending some time in the AHL right now but has serious upside as a power winger that can play 200 feet of the ice and contribute as a goal scorer or playmaker, nothing wrong with that pick it’s the next two that confuse me. Aidn Hill was selected last year in the middle of the 3rd as a re-entry and a goalie, his numbers haven’t improved this year, though his team is worse, and aside from his size he really didn’t have a lot going for him heading into last years draft. Maybe they get something here idk but I would’ve traded down. Kevin Stenlund also a 96 but a late birthday. He’s got size but seems to lack the desire to use it, there’s some potential as he has some high end skills but looks out of place as a bottom 6 player in the SHL at the moment.

Calgary – 4 selections, highest pick 12 – Jake DeBrusk
Grade B+: I liked Calgary’s draft quite a bit. DeBrusk is a good scoring winger with good offensive vision and when he competes is an effective 200 foot player, will likely be in the AHL next year and could be with Calgary pretty soon. After him comes Knott who had an incredibly slow start to the season in Niagra but picked it up of late. He’s been put on the 2nd line away from Ho-Sang and has been forced to create his own offense. Next year in the OHL will be big for him as one of the oldest 19 year olds in the league and playing almost have the season at 20 Knott will be relied upon to carry Niagra’s offense, he’ll need to add serious muscle to his frame. VanDeSompel and Cirelli both went deep on a Gens team last year playing into the memorial cup and oddly both were forward on the same PK unit, even though Van De Sompel plays D. Van De Sompel is highly skilled and creative while Cirelli is priming himself to be a valuable role player in the NHL.
